Ecosystem Library
What the world has learned about how innovation ecosystems and the communities around them grow, gathered and annotated for the people building them.
New ventures, organizations and ideas don’t succeed or fail alone. They grow inside a web of founders, makers, investors, mentors, universities, governments, nonprofits, employers and neighbors, and the quality of that web shapes what is possible. Over the past few decades this web has become a field of study in its own right, called innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurial ecosystems or startup communities depending on who is looking.
The field has deep roots: Saxenian on why Silicon Valley outpaced Route 128, Granovetter on the strength of weak ties, Ostrom on communities governing what they share. It has grown around a few influential lenses: the ecosystem as a set of conditions (Isenberg), as a community led by entrepreneurs (Feld’s Boulder Thesis), as a rainforest of unplanned recombination (Hwang and Horowitt), and as relationships that can be studied and measured (Stam, Spigel).
A few lessons recur. Copying Silicon Valley rarely works; each place builds from its own strengths. Density and connection matter more than any single program. Ecosystems take decades, not funding cycles. And measurement is still hard. The Boulder Thesis was written in Colorado, where this library began alongside Colorado Startup Resources, so Colorado is its first worked example.

Evergreen★ Regional Advantage: Culture and Competition in Silicon Valley and Route 128

Evergreen★ Entrepreneurial Ecosystems and Regional Policy: A Sympathetic Critique

The Ecosystem Library is an initiative of Humans In Common. Every entry is chosen and annotated by HIC and revisited over time; seedlings are newly added, growing entries are annotated and connected, and evergreen entries are core texts reviewed regularly. Links go to the original publishers. The library began on Colorado Startup Resources, which shares its data.
